Amethyst was considered equal in value to diamond, ruby or emerald, until the mid 19th century when vast Amethyst deposits were discovered in Brazil, collapsing the market. It remains relatively affordable gemstone to this day, except for exceptionally rare stones from Russia, also known as "Deep Russians".
